Today Untenu has granted money to BC (Bandanh Chaktomok – National LGBT Network Cambodia) to help an HIV positive transgender sex worker with medical assistance so that she will be able to start working again after recovering.
Sex worker from Prey Veng – working in Bantey Meanchey
V. is a male-to-female transgender and is originally from the province of Prey Veng, in the south-east of Cambodia, not far from the border with Vietnam. In her passport, ‘salesman’ is mentioned as her profession. But on the other side of the country – in the North-West at the Thai border, she now works as a sex worker. She has contracted HIV because customers insisted on condomless sex. She succumbs under the pressure of her customers because they pay more than for sex with a condom.
The life of a sex worker is not an easy life to say the least. The working conditions are tough. Customers can become violent and often make demands that are bad for health. Sex workers in Cambodia get to deal regularly with the police because prostitution is illegal.
Today we received the request via BC to help her. We say it as it is: she could no longer work due to anal problems. A small operation is necessary and for that she has no money. Our partner organization quickly got the green light to use Untenu money for an operation, medication, transport and food support. In the hope that V. quickly recovers and will be able to take care of herself again.
