The average income in Cambodia is very low. The income of HIV positive LGBTIs often is lower and/or irregular. HIV positive LGBTIs are sometimes faced with unexpected and insurmountable costs. Because their situation and perspective can deteriorate further, Untenu provides emergency assistance.
Emergency aid is not provided on a structural base, but only in order to alleviate emergencies. That can go to avoid a one-time contribution in rental costs that someone is homeless. Also, money for food, or sometimes help is given in the form of food.
ARV is paid by the Royal Government of Cambodia, but additional medical costs aren’t. Sometimes Untenu provides one-time contribution to the costs if someone isn’t able to pay for this.
It can occur HIV positive LGBTIs are disowned by their family or community. At worst disowned people die, and the body of the deceased person is left on the side of the road. Sometimes HIV positive LGBTIs are accepted by the family, but there is no money for a dignified funeral.
In all these cases Untenu can contribute – together with other NGOs – towards the cost of a decent funeral.
